The Number One bestselling crime thriller from the award-winning Stuart MacBride. A bloody, brilliant and brutal story of murder, kidnap and revenge.

Detective Constable Ash Henderson has a dark secret...

Five years ago his daughter, Rebecca, went missing on the eve of her thirteenth birthday. A year later the first card arrived: homemade, with a Polaroid picture stuck to the front - Rebecca, strapped to a chair, gagged and terrified. Every year another card: each one worse than the last.

The tabloids call him 'The Birthday Boy'. He's been snatching girls for twelve years, always just before their thirteenth birthday, sending the families his homemade cards showing their daughters being slowly tortured to death.

But Ash hasn't told anyone about Rebecca's birthday cards - they all think she's just run away from home - because if anyone finds out, he'll be taken off the investigation. And he's sacrificed too much to give up before his daughter's killer gets what he deserves...

I'm glad I'm not alone in not being able to get into this book. There is just something that makes me not want to read it. I love the Logan McRae books. Not a fan of Ash Henderson.

Couldn't get "into" this novel. Gave it a few chapters , put it away & started a different novel.I'm not rating it because I didn't finish it and really didn't get that far into it. But for me, it didn't rate at all. Perhaps I will try it again another time.

This was my first reading of 'Ash Henderson' and it was so gripping I stayed up till 3 am to finish it ! -And the next day I went down to the library to get the next Ash Henderson offering. -Certainly this was dark and sometimes even morbid - but so can life be. I can empathise with Ash in his misery, anger and eagerness to get the killer. - And unhappy endings are often realistic, life is not always a fairy tale!
- I felt this was an excellent novel

I couldn't have said it better myself Sporty Reader. You nailed it. In my opinion, however, this novel rates only one star and that is a generous assessment.

Boy, you think you're having a bad week? Try being Ash Henderson. The fact he's alive is a testament to his stubborn, irreverent personality. It does stretch the bounds of credibility that all this could happen to one person & MacBride takes no prisoners, LOTS of people will die in various creative & gruesome ways. But you have to feel for Ash who suffers terribly while trying to protect those that matter most in the train wreck that is his life This is a violent, subversive, darkly humorous police procedural (with a character who quite possibly is the most annoying to ever jump off a page) that will entertain at top speed.

Fun to read. Darkly comic and fast paced mystery/thriller. Not for Agatha Christie fans. This book has a much harder edge. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved the humour- Macbride has a morbid but wicked sense of humour. But this is probably the worst book he's written.

The plot's much darker than what Macbride fans are used to. The Logan McRae series are morbid but they're a cake walk compared to this time round.

Ash Henderson's other series he'd be depicted as the villain you'd love to see get his comeuppance but seeing as he's the protagonist we have to cut him some slack...Still, doesn't help do the trick. Henderson's a walking time bomb blitzing his way across the pages like a blind and exceptionally stupid bull terrier without a leash.

Lots of twists and turns, some predictable, most not but it's not for everyone and the ending...well, it didn't satisfy me and let's just say that anyone looking for a feel good book and end should just stay away.

Hope Macbride gets his act together and gets back to the Logan Mcrae series...

Northeastern Tartan noir - a good read that leaves you breathless. Suspend disbelief at the door.
