"In 1974, a misguided 19-year-old named Michael Peterson (Tom Hardy) decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawed-off shotgun and a head full of dreams, he attempted to rob a post office. Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to seven years in jail, Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement. Shot from an intelligent, provocative and stylized approach, Bronson follows the metamorphosis of Mickey Peterson, who nicknamed himself Charles Bronson, into Britain's most dangerous prisoner."--Container.

This man acted like an animal and should have been put to death with his first kill.

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn tackles the enigma of Bronson in this schizoid biopic and he finds his perfect instrument in Tom Hardy who mugs and rages with mad glee, his shorn head and handlebar moustache making him look like an insane circus strongman. Narrated by a clownish Bronson (Hardy) as he performs a spirited monologue for an imaginary audience in an imaginary theatre straight out of Rocky Horror, Refn sticks mainly to the facts but he does so with a theatrical zeal suitable to his subject. Hardy’s unstable alpha male stampedes across the screen roaring defiance and messing with people’s heads (often while nude and greased up for a fight) while a soundtrack ranging from Verdi and Wagner to Pet Shop Boys and Glass Candy provide counterpoint. With surreal passages butting up against bone-crunching realism, the whole film passes before one’s eyes like like a bit of psychotic cabaret. Upon seeing the film in 2011 Peterson himself described it as “…theatrical, creative, and brilliant…” I dare not disagree.

This guy had his own thoughts and they developed as he grew up and his mom never addressed his mental issues. He is one scary individual that lives in his own thoughts.
We found it interesting but not a great movie almost turned it of but finally stayed with it and glad we did.

Imagine a composite character of the King of Comedy and Raging Bull and you have Tom Hardy's portrayal of long-time British prisoner "Charles Bronson." This movie is well worth watching though definitely not for the squeamish.

If you are expecting a linear, heart-pounding action film this may not be the movie for you. If however, you enjoy a chilling tale of one of Europe's most violent prisoners with a bit of artistic expression and exceptional acting, this is a film for you.
The editing, direction and acting make this film so strong which is why I cannot recommend this more.

No sane person could believe that Charles Bronson, the UK's most violent prisoner, should be freed; not from this film loosely based on his life, and certainly not from any knowledge of his true story. But believe it or not, this movie prompted an amnesty appeal for its subject in 2013. Perhaps its supporters don't know that Bronson doesn't resemble star Tom Hardy, but another Charlie -- Manson. As a film, though, Bronson is first rate. I wish Refn's current films had its snappy pace, but don't go in expecting a typical dudes in prison docudrama. Many of the episodes that might strike you as surreal fantasy did in fact occur.

One of my all-time favourite films.

Tom Hardy is a unique talent, and I was looking forward to this one. I was disappointed in the director's approach to the film, however. I would have preferred a more traditional biopic than whatever you want to categorize this as.

I loved this movie. Hardy's performace is thru the roof amazing. There are a few abstract scenes and plenty of violence which normally do not mix well together but i found this film was able to quite brilliantly do just that. Not for everyone's taste, but this chicky liked it.

Choosing to be a brutal psycho. I am not sure there is any value in watching this film. I still don't see why anyone would choose this path, but maybe that is just a sign I am still somewhat sane. One observation. He would have been able to have almost the same experience if he had been a guard. Too bad he didn't think of that.
