The author keeps his signature style of twisted violence combined with humor going this tike with the irascible main character of Roberta Steel. A number of twisted mental images are provided throughout the story. Nice to have a summer setting by the author for once though when it rains it pours. Worth reading if you like an edge to your story.

McBride's writing style has improved with every book, and reaches an energetic, fun flow full of Scottish slang in this one.

The story overall is fun reading marred by the main character, Roberta Steel. The way she has been written in the Logan MacRae series, of which this book is an offshoot, Steel is a jolt of electricity every now and then. She's great as a supporting character but she's selfish and lazy, treats her fellow cops badly while making them do all the work, is self-destructive, and is a terrible detective -- all of which make her an almost unbearable main character, which she is in this book. Her closest subordinate, Constable Tufty does all the physical work and crime solving. He even saves Steel from her own impulsiveness.

Steel does get her comeuppance at the end -- actually, two: one violent one penitent. But Logan's my man, and he makes a powerful cameo that makes me more eager for the next in the Logan MacRae series.

I love Stuart MacBride and both the Logan McRae and Ash Henderson series. This one is about Roberta Steel, after having been demoted to a DS, working without her sidekick, Laz.

I love this quirky character. In this one we get to know her a bit better and find that she can actually work and is more passionate about her job than we've previously seen.
What I like about MacBride's novels is that while they often have violence, the books have a lot of humour and great characters. This one has all that...but the violence in this one turned me off...sad and sickening. While the bad guys get their comeuppance in the end, many of us just aren't used to the type of crimes committed in this story.

Ah, this is a tough one. Been reading this author for years & I'm a huge fan but this book was just not for me. Roberta Steel (from most of the Logan McRae series) takes centre stage as MC & all I can say is you'd better be one of her biggest fans to enjoy this outing.

The good stuff: a twisty mystery with a proper bad guy you desperately want to see get what he so karmically deserves.

What I didn't enjoy: 24/7 Roberta in all her grumpy, raunchy, scratching glory. She has a shiny new partner here & the mystery aspect of the plot takes a back seat as we are treated to a modern version of the Keystone Cops. They fall, trip, get splattered & assaulted over & over again in an attempt at physical screwball comedy that began to wear thin.

She's an original, I'll give her that. But I think this will be best enjoyed by readers who find her hilarious & are fans of the Three Stooges brand of humour.
