As a Warcraft fan, I honestly went into this movie thinking it was going to be terrible, as most video game adaptations are. What surprised me is that it ended up being one of the best fantasy films I have seen in a long while. Warcraft follows a group of orcs who must team up with the humans of Azeroth to prevent an evil force from destroying the world. The visuals are stunning, the world building is immersive, and it features an epic score composed by the talented Ramin Djawadi (known for his work on Game of Thrones). My one criticism is that some of the characters fell flat due to their limited screen time and lack of development. I hope they release an extended edition at some point, as it is clear that much was cut from this film to give it a reasonable run-time. All in all, Warcraft is sword and sorcery at its finest, and you're going to have an entertaining time watching it.

All the ingredients ( hulking baddies, heroes, beloved royalty, magic masters, etc ) that could have turned this movie into a joke.
Amazingly they did not. Credit the writers and editors for forging an entertaining gem.

This movie surprised me. I am someone who has played the game, and knows it's world and story well. But I also know Hollywood has a tendency to not perform too well with adapting games to cinema. Now, I still can't say this is a grade A oscer winner, but what I can say is it managed to get the story onto the silver screen mostly intact. Which is an accomplishment in itself.

It's a visual treat of a show with the cg actors feeling incredibly solid and mostly evading the uncanny valley thanks to them not being quite human. The story is fine, though rushes itself at lightning speeds in the opening 15 minutes to try and get to it's main narrative. And while some actors put on good performances it isn't a universal. As a film I'd say it's good, it won't change the industry, but it's a fun, enjoyable ride.

One point worth noting is that this is a bit of a unicorn for fantasy in particular, as Orc's are not purely villainous, and some of the most well written characters are in fact of the Orcish people. This turns on it's head the standard fantasy trope of human, elfs, and dwarfs being the only good guys on the scene.

In the context of films adapting video games this, thus far, is a gold standard. Primarily thanks to the IP owner (Blizzard entertainment) being involved during the entire process.

As a summary, if you're looking for a fun movie with great effects and a very unique stance on fantasy and it's main characters, this is a movie worth giving a shot. And if you're a fan of the games, I can give it a stronger recommendation as, other than a few details, it did very well at translating a narrative spanning dozens of hours into one 2 hour film.

I've never played the game, or even seen it played, so this movie was all new to me. Although it seemed a bit long, the CGI and the acting were very good. I liked the plot, and most of the characters were developed enough that despite their less-than-human appearance, I got emotionally invested in them. It is clearly a "part one" movie; it may become a new franchise like The Fast and The Furious.

I like 'B' movies for the most part, especially if they are big. For example, I liked Pacific Rim. I even wanted to see Warcraft in theater but never had the time. Now I'm glad of that fact. This is one of the worst movies I've seen. Its hard to be specific, the orc politics were stupid, as were the human-elf-dwarf politics. The big twist was stupid and not really a twist since they pretty much told you it was coming. The people most able to save the day don't (Tor something- I never played the game and the name didn't stick with me from the movie). All they do is let an apprentice magic user into their holy of holy and send him out with an impossible task, which, of course, he accomplishes for no apparent reason. This should have been an action movie but the action was cartoonish and unconvincing. In one scene an orc will tear through 20 knights killing as he goes and in the next 20 knights will stand off a thousand orcs. In short, this movie was a complete waste of time.

Have never played the game so I cannot comment on its worthiness vis a vis its origins. As a movie, I was very entertained for about the first half, then got a bit bored with the rest of it. I thought the sensitive orc Durotan ("played" by Toby Kebbell), the mixed-race orc/humanoid Garona (Paul Patton), and Orgrim (Ben Schnetzer) were great characters, but all the rest were a bit cardboardy.

Maybe it's because I had low expectations going in, but I really enjoyed this film. I loved the pacing, the acting, and the over all story. The cgi was fine with me, I also loved the fantasy side of it. I hope they continue with this franchise, maybe it's just the kid in me.

Garona. No good will come from us both dying. Look around you. We're surrounded. Your killing me is the only hope we have for peace. You told Lady Taria that killing her would bring you honor. Well, killing me will make you a hero. Survive. Bring peace between orcs and humans. You must.
