Nobody knows better than Matthew Scudder how far down a person can sink in this city. A young prostitute named Kim knew it also -- and she wanted out. Maybe Kim didn't deserve the life fate had dealt her. She surely didn't deserve her death. The alcoholic ex-cop turned p.i. was supposed to protect her, but someone slashed her to ribbons on a crumbling New York City waterfront pier. Now finding Kim's killer will be Scudder's penance. But there are lethal secrets hiding in the slain hooker's past that are far dirtier than her trade. And there are many ways of dying in this cruel and dangerous town -- some quick and brutal ... and some agonizingly slow.

Lawrence Block has written one of the best murder mystery series that I have ever read. I have been reading him for more than 25 years, I try to read some of his books in this series every year. While this is not literature, it is excellent entertainment. There is so much crap out there so when one finds an entertaining, innovative, and dense story telling author I tend to read them again and again. Unfortunately the library has only an incomplete collection. Every book in the Mattew Scudder series is a little gem, if you enjoy murder mysteries and aren't looking for literature. I read to be entertained, and to avoid the crap that is on TV. Anyways, please try any of Matthew Scudder series (just look up Matthew Scudder on the net if you need a title), and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.

What a great book, more about a man's struggle with alcoholism than solving a murder mystery. I cannot remember a time when I was nearly moved to tears reading the last page of a book. Thank you Lawrence Block.
