Very good war movie that excels very well at shell shocking it's audience. This movie really wants you to feel sand falling from the sky after a bomb hits the beach just next to you, and wants gunshots to pierce your ears. I recommend watching this movie on a good sound system, and turn up the volume because the battle they were having wouldn't have been a quiet affair, so to crank the volume I think is much more immersive for this movie.

Very good but lots of blood

Just gonna say it out there, I love this movie! It was amazing! I really had a fun time and a tense time, but it is a really good movie. The cinematography for this movie is amazing. Some of the criticism that I heard that the movie is very unconventional in the way that is going to tell the story, because this is a historical event, we already know what happened to Dunkirk and now how do you tell the story without being bored, but Christopher Nolan (director), twisted away from a lot of stereotypes of typical world war movie whereas you are not going to see dismembered bodies and seeing a man with a American flag, NO! In this movie you can definitely feel the tension regardless of that you can feel the seriousness of the situation. But overall, it has things that works amazingly for this movie and there are things a little bit ugly but I mean it is a Christopher Nolan movie, he made apparently one of the most perfect movies of all history. 4/5 Stars. @moviefanatic of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

This film explains the Churchill story of the "Darkest Hour"; what it meant of rescue sent to the soldiers trapped by the Germans & the parliament having continuous bouts on the floor.
Here you see the plan of Churchill action of getting fisherman to head on the rescue & the view of the soldiers waiting for the detail day after day on the Beach of Dunkirk.

story of disenchantment in the war... but the civilians have the only foresight to WIN.

I watched both the Warner Bros Version and the BBC Version. The only parts worth watching
of the Warner Bros. Version was the action of the Spitfires. A truly beautiful and remarkable
aircraft. The rest of the film focused on the attempts of a couple of British soldiers who tried
to jump the long lines of other troops moving to the ships for embarkation. The BBC version
showed the front line action and the hopelessness of the BEF trying to stem the tide of the
German Blitzkrieg. The BBC showed the teribile effects of war wounds on soldiers and the
primitive attempts of the medical corp in treating the wounded with very little supplies. Lack of water, lack of food and medicines. Lack of proper sterilizing operating conditions. Nothing
like as seen in the TV series MASH. My final words, making of the movie Dunkirk by Warner Bros. a waste of time. Get the BBC Version.

I'm somewhat appalled at some review opinions, then I considered the possible age, interests & general whole person aspect. Sad. This is not about a battle, a film of the usual killing. This is about triumph, survival, protection of a small island that saved itself to defeat a horrid enemy. Had this survival event not happened, the entire course of history would be so different, there might not be a Britain, there certainly wouldn't be the US as we know it today.

How a viewer can not be affected by this depiction is beyond me. I'm glad I took the time to watch/listen to features on how it was made.

Found it boring.....there was hardly any talking to understand what was happening or why. I learnt nothing about Dunkirk I pretty much just googled about it the whole way through. I’m not sure why it got so many awards. I didn’t finish watching it.

A welcome break from a long parade of Saving Private Ryan knockoffs, Dunkirk has intertwining story lines, characters, keeps the action going even during quieter moments, and has set the bar for aerial dogfights in movies. Short, action packed, with zero character development. Normally, I whine and complain about the lack of character development and/or differences, but here, I don't care because the action is so good it distracts, and personally, with only three backstories for soldiers, it is refreshing not to have to hear them yammer on and on about who they left behind and why they're fighting. AND NO LOVE TRIANGLE!!!!!

Exceptional filmmaking. Dunkirk puts you in the middle of the harrowing events of May 26, 1940 – June 4, 1940 with an unflinching look at the misery and mayhem of WWII. I went in not knowing much about this story, I left the movie wanting to know more.

Highly recommended.

He didn't kill anyone. He was just looking for a way off the sand, like the rest of us.
Where's the bloody air force?
-The navy's requisitioned her.
No French soldiers. No French soldiers. No. No, no French. English only. English only past this point. No. It's a British ship. No, you have your own ships.
Dunkirk's so far. Why can't they just load at Calais?
-The enemy had something to say about it.
Ah, down here we're sitting ducks.

Colonel, you're gonna have to decide how many more wounded to evacuate. One stretcher takes the space of seven standing men.
What about the French?
-Publicly, Churchill's told them, "Bras dessous." Arm in arm, leaving together.
And privately?
-We need our army back.
How many men are they talking about, sir?
-Churchill wants 30,000. Ramsay's hoping we can give him 45.
There are 400,000 men on this beach, sir.
He feels safer on deck. You would too if you'd been bombed.
What's wrong with your friend?
-He's looking for a quick way out. In case we go down.

A bloody frog. A cowardly little queue-jumping frog.

As soon as he pokes his head out, they'll slaughter him.
-Better him than me.
It's not fair.
- Survival's not fair. No, it's shit. It's fear, and it's greed. Fate pushed through the bowels of men.
Shit. He saved our lives.
-And he's about to do it again.
No, don't! Stop!
-Somebody's gotta get off, so the rest of us can live. If you wanna volunteer...
Fxck no. I'm going home. And if this is the price? I'll live with it. But it's wrong.
-Go on!
One man's not going to make enough difference.
-You'd best hope it does, because you'd be volunteering next.
You're RAF?
-No. Not me. My brother. He flew Hurricanes. Died third week into the war.
Well done. Well done, lads. Well done.
-All we did is survive.
That's enough.

Part 1 of 2 -- Ending voice over of Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on 4 June 1940:
"Wars are not won by evacuations. But there was a victory inside this deliverance, which should be noted. Our thankfulness at the escape of our army must not blind us to the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium is a colossal military disaster. We must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France. We shall fight on the seas and oceans. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost... "

Part 2 of 2 -- Ending voice over of Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on 4 June 1940:
"We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender. And even if this island or a large part of it were subjugated and staring, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."
