At nineteen, Berie encounters a seductive and mysterious man. Soon she finds herself compelled by his promise of a new life. He ferries her into a place of order and chaos: the Ash Family farm. There, she joins an intentional community living off the fertile land of the mountains, bound together by high ideals and through relationships she can't untangle. I had a difficult time understanding the point of the book until about half way through, but once I was there it was such a powerful message. Harmony's insecurity and self doubt led her down a terrible rabbit hole and the decisions she made led her to a place where she was in too deep to turn back. I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who couldn't relate to Harmony's feelings at one point or another in their lives. We all become insecure and doubtful at different points in our lives, but it is the mindset that makes a difference in how we make it out. This is what the book shows you.

A tale of a cult, an explanation of how easily young people can be drawn into the sway of a charismatic leader. This book is well-written, but more importantly it has an important message of understanding how the vulnerable can be convinced to commit unspeakable Acts. An excellent Book for a book club discussion.
