1951 A well done movie about PT boats in the So. Pacific. Good story. 10 years BEFORE PT 109

This is a fine movie, although it perpetuates the myth of the PT boat operations, which were more dangerous to their crews than to the enemy. The biggest exponent of the PT boat concept, and commander portrayed in the movie, Medal of Honor winner John Bulkeley, had a genius for self-promotion, and didn't mind misrepresenting the exploits of his boats for public consumption. Refer to "JFK, Reckless Youth," by Nigel Hamilton for more about PT boats.

The film based on a novel by the same name, was loosely based upon actual events. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the USA into WWII and the USA forces in the Philippines, so close to Japan were in an extremely vulnerable position. One of the forces there was a small PT boat force, led by characters portrayed by Robert Montgomery and John Wayne. While they were no match for the massive Japanese forces, they demonstrated the usefulness and agility of PT boats before the US forces were forced out of the Philippines, including General Douglas Macarthur who vowed to return when the USA was ready.
