In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder-but begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated. And look for Alafair Burke's latest heart-racing novel of psychological suspense, The Wife. Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it. Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last night's party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. That's when Jack's world falls apart. Olivia Randall is one of New York City's best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fianc,̌ Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicide-and that one of the victims was connected to his wife's murder-there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him-and why? For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?

Alafair Burke has certainly inherited a great deal of talent from her father!! This mystery was not my favorite of her novels, but it has a surprise ending that redeems it. I love it when I am fooled by the story. Recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

(Review Not on Blog)

I really enjoyed this suspense novel! It reminds me of Harlan Coben's standalone books where the realism is the true suspense. Olivia is hired by her ex-fiance's teenage daughter when he is accused of murdering his wife's killer and two bystanders. She cannot believe the man she once loved could do anything like this. She sets out to prove his innocence, and figure out who would frame him. The twists in this book were great and nothing major or showy. I would recommend this to any fans of suspense.

This is my 2nd book to read by this author. She presents a good story with strong characters. She throws the reader a curve as the mystery comes to an end.

I confess that I only started reading the works of Alafair Burke because I am a big fan of her Father's writings. No one would ever say that she mimics her father- her ideas and style are all of her own choosing. I've read most of her work, including the Portland series from her wary days. She has improved with each novel.

The Ex is a great example of her improvement over the years. The plot is well thought out, the pacing is excellent, and she is sure of her characters. The protagonist may be flawed, but in a way the furthers the theme of guilt and consequences. I enjoyed the brisk dialogue, too. I am looking forward to reading her recently published novel.

Good short mystery in which a lawyer is asked to defend a former fiancé who has been accused of murder. As she delves deeper into creating a viable defense, the accused story begins to unravel.

A first read of this author.......good plot, and characters, will read more of her work.

This reads like a Harlequin romance with a sad ending. The lawyer is self centred and spends more time 'thinking' about herself, her past affairs and how clever/ pretty she is and her cool friends too! The plot had some great twists but
avoid this author if you are looking for decently written literature.

I really enjoyed this book.
Jack Harris has been charged with killing 3 people. His teenage daughter, Buckley, enlists the help of Olivia Randall, a high-powered defence attorney. Olivia is also the ex of Jack Harris. 20 years ago Olivia treated Jack badly and feels she owes it to him to take on his case.
As the evidence is revealed, Olivia goes between believing in Jack and trusting him to realizing he is lying to her and wondering whether he is in fact guilty. Loved the legal aspects to this novel.
