Eleven thousand years ago, a god was born. Cursed into the body of a human, Acheron spent a lifetime of shame. But the strongest steel is forged from the fires of hell...

Acheron's human death unleashed an unspeakable horror that almost destroyed the earth. Then, brought back against his will, he became the sole defender of mankind. Only it was never that simple. For centuries, Acheron has fought for our survival and hidden a past he'll do anything to keep concealed. Until a lone woman who refuses to be intimidated by him threatens his very existence. Now his survival--and ours--hinges on hers, and old enemies reawaken and unite to kill them both. War has never been more deadly...or more fun.

I so looked forward to reading this book and to say it was excessive in its graphic description of abuse, rape and dehumanization is perhaps not a strong enough word.
So while I can appreciate that the author wanted to explore and try to have the audience capture maybe a tenth of what the character felt, I think it distracted from our ability to read this with any kind of pleasure. You rooted for Acheron, yet it never let up that he was constantly fighting a battle. Abuse without question must be like this and the pain felt by a victim must be beyond understanding and I don't want to offend any victim of abuse in any way, I think in context of a book of fiction it was too much.
Thankfully there is the second part of the book that helped you relax a bit and enjoy his journey a bit more. If there were gods, well I suspect we would dislike them intensely for their game playing.
To the comment about Styxx being similar, thankfully I held strong and read that book as well and it was not anywhere near to the degree of Acheron in its graphic abuse. Styxx is worth reading to see the other side of the relationship between the siblings and gives you such a great picture of how our interpretations of anothers life is almost always incorrect. If you havent read Styxx it is well worth the read.
I gave Acheron 3.5 stars because of the excessive and at times gratuitous abuse, if you get through and hopefully you will, the rest becomes more palatable and worth hearing his story and in the end just glad that he found love in the truest sense of it, unconditional and life affirming.

Kenyon wasn't kidding when she said the first part would be hard to take. I cannot count the times I cried and even got nauseous. And the anger I felt was frightening. I too am a survivor of abuse, and while I realize this is not a true story, it took me back. Looking at my abuse though, and reading Ash', mine was nothing! The 2nd half made up for it though. I only wish I could give more than 5 stars because it certainly deserves it. I LOVE that Ash and Tory became a couple. And, I would LOVE to know Simi. She was so awesome. Artemis however, i'd like to, well, you can imagine if you've read this. A MUST READ!!

2 Stars for the first half of the book due to the graphic and excessive rape and torture. 5 Stars for the second half of the book because of the great interaction between Ash and Tory and the excellent relationship building. There was no need for Ms. Kenyon to have half the book be so disturbing and depressing. I will be sure to miss Styxx as that book is even more of the same theme of rape and torture.

there are no words to adequately describe this book. It's one of the most emotional, GUT WRENCHING, heartbreaking books I've ever read, but at the same time it was inspiring, uplifting and completely amazing. And I just can't find the words to do this book justice. Acheron is a dream come true. We finally get the answers to so many questions.

Book 15 about Ash and Tory; preceded by Dream Chaser and followed by One Silent Night. Finally a really long explanation of what happened to Acheron and why he is the way he is - sometimes too graphic and too much; but at least now we know the real Artemis and why we hate her. I was hoping part 2 of the book will be more exciting though. I was a bit disappointed with Tory's character - I hoped that her intelligence will be better put to use. ***We first meet Tory in The Dream-Hunter - story of Geary and Arik*** Enjoy all 722 pgs

I read this book last year and it was amazing. I admit it was very graphic and if you are faint of heart you might not want to read it. It will break your heart over and over again when reading the first half of the book. As you find out more about Acheron's past you become more and more emotionally attached to him. I loved each page of this book and I couldn't put it down.

If you are a Dark-Hunter fan this is a must read, I promise you won't regret it.

I started reading the series two years ago and of all of the books I loved this one the most. I am reading the entire series over again. I love Ash and Semi.

Acheron. When it absolutely, positively must be destroyed overnight.

"It's easy to look at people and make quick judgements about them, their present and their pasts, but you'd be amazed at the pain and tears a single smile hides. what a person shows to the world is only one tiny facet of the icberg hidden from sight. And more often than not, it's lined with cracks and scars that go all the way to the foundation of their soul."
