This is a wonderful book for talking with children about the value of caring for and preserving old things, rather than simply disposing of them because it is easier. Henry Cole's illustrations are lucid and warm. In that the house is a character, the book resembles the classic Virginia Lee Burton story, The Little House and it also makes a good companion to Henry Cole's book On Meadowview Street, about reclaiming suburban lawns to make more space for wild creatures and plants. My daughter loves all of these books.
