The retelling of the classic Cold War doomsday thriller. A computer malfunction triggers the transmission of nuclear-attack codes to a U.S. bomber squadron. The orders are irreversible, the primary target is Moscow, and the President, his advisors and military leaders race time to head off global catastrophe. Recalling the adrenaline-rush of early TV drama, this movie was staged and telecast live in black-and-white, establishing an immediate sense of history unfolding.

i take FAIL-SAFE as one of three (3) films which foretold the events of 11/22/63. the other two are, SEVEN DAYS IN MAY; and, the Kubrick classic, DR.STRANGELOVE. The ironic thing about SEVEN DAYS IN MAY, is, JFK (the President who was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, on 11/22/63), gave permission for the filmmakers to shoot their film on and in the White House grounds, not while he was there, working. So he must at least have known, in the back of his mind, that it was plausibly possible for a coup to be done, when he went to Texas on a politically ambitious trip. /// FAIL-SAFE was better, with Fonda playing the President, I do agree. I also pitch in that the novel is darn good, too. It is not an either/or situation with the film or the book. Both are excellent, myself giving the novel the edge, in a near-tie.//Other novels dealing with the subject which are excellent, are THE UGLY AMERICAN, and THE STAR-SPANGLED CONTRACT. Graham Greene wrote one, also. Look it up, under his ouvree.

The plot as always is edge-of-your-seat compelling, but this version can't hold a candle to either the original novel or the 1964 film. Richard Dreyfus is miscast as the president - I don't buy him as having the wisdom and courage to take the actions required. Watch the original version and you'll wish we had Henry Fonda in that seat when disaster strikes.

I watched parts of this when it first came out and was happy to finally be able to see the whole thing from beginning to end. I didn't find it to be a story without its loopholes but appreciate the urgency and sincerity of its message even if it is, in my opinion, a bit heavy handed.

This made-for-TV movie, a remake of the original 1964 drama directed by Sidney Lumet, is just as gripping and tense. The film is dialog-driven, so it is better than most modern action films. You will be on the edge of your seat, and it makes you think about our World today (for instance, the North Korean threat of nuclear missiles). Well worth watching! You won't regret it.

A somewhat realistic doomsday scenerio except for the president ordering the bombing of NYC. Even more realism might have been the US offering assistance to the USSR for the cleanup. I say this because in the film, our defences are obviously better then the military of the USSR so for them to attempt retailation would not make sense. The additional loss of innocent lifes could not possibly make up for the initial "mistake" and tragic loss of millions in Moscow. This film highlights the reason we need to be less dependent on technology. Unfortunately, that is not the current trend in our society.
