Some of it is very compelling and the main character's self-centeredness, angst and being black-and-white judgmental is bang-on teenager, well done. But the book manages to take a boarding-school murder in a small town and cram in every possible secret or crime imaginable: rape! Murder! Incest! Illicit affairs! Drug addiction! Suicide! Homosexuality! Parental sociopathy! Alcoholism! Betrayal! EVERYONE in the book has a secret and it's a dark, scandalous, SINFUL one. The plot would have been well-served by cutting down all the melodrama.
