What is a cliché? To me, it's something that has an "overrated" or easily identified concept attached with it. Two friends Dave and Julia swore that they would never ever become high school clichés who "acted" in certain ways or did the "incredibly boring" things that everyone else did. So with weeks left, they decided to "live a little" and try out everything they wrote on their "Nevers list." To be abrupt, I didn't enjoy reading from Julia's side as much as Dave's because I felt that his heart was in a stronger place. Hers hid behind a wall of making jokes of everything, and she wasn't truthful with herself until the end. - @Siri of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library The day before 9th grade, best friends Dave and Julia make a list: The Never List. A list of high school clichés that Dave and Julia swore never to do. Dave’s problem? He broke number 8, “Never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school.” Or he could’ve broken number 10, “Never date your best friend” when he fell in love with Julia four years ago. Then Julia gets a crazy idea. Why not break every single Never as a celebration of their graduation? Even though the two dye their hair awful colours, the idea seems perfect for Dave, because he gets to date Julia. Except, Dave meets Gretchen; the blonde definition of perfection. Things go haywire as Dave must choose between his best friend, and a normal high school experience. Adi Alsaid has this way of twisting your emotions until you have no idea what will happen next. He makes you think the story is going in one direction, then sharp turn onto another road. Just as you think it’s settling down again, you go on a highway of bumps and twists and turns and you just want to cry because it didn’t end the way you wanted it to. An ending that is the perfect ending, it’s just that this isn’t the classic happily ever after, which is why the ending sucks, but I still can’t picture this book ending any other way than it did. 9 out of 9 Muses. - @Slytherin_of_Cabin7 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
