"The hard-driving, truth-telling autobiography of America's great poet-folk singer." That's the somewhat ostentatious subtitle. "Autobiography" should be taken with a grain of salt, as there are some fictionalized parts, but what is more American than fudging bits of your history (Guthrie acolyte Dylan learned a thing or two about this)? Guthrie's impact on an entire generation of folk musicians can't be overstated and those who are familiar with his music will enjoy this account of his Oklahoma childhood, his tramp-like travels around the country and his early music career. Other books you might enjoy: "The Grapes of Wrath," Charles Willeford's "I Was Looking for a Street" and "On the Road." Made into a film with David Carradine.
