Two of my favorite genres, police procedural mystery and fantasy, come together in the Beka Cooper series. In this second volume of the trilogy, Beka is now a full-fledged Dog, a member of Tortall's police force. Beka's struggle to find a full-time partner who fits with her intense style of Dog-work is interrupted by the appearance in Corus of a large number of counterfeit coins. Soon, through hard work and a few coincidences, Beka is assigned to the counterfeiting case as well as to the handling of a scent-hound named Achoo. The search leads Beka and her former training Dog Goodwin to Port Caynn where they must play the part of corrupt, lazy Dogs and use all their resources, including Beka's ability to talk to dust spinners and the dead who ride on the backs of pigeons, to uncover who is at the root of the plot. There's a charming new love interest for Beka and it's nice to get to see her have some fun, but I missed the members of Corus' Court of the Rogue who were introduced to us in the first book (not to mention Pounce!). It will be interesting to see where the third book in the trilogy goes - I actually think Beka could carry an ongoing series, but then I wouldn't get to see what Pierce does with the rest of the Tortall world or her Circle of Magic universe. Really, Pierce just can't write books fast enough for me.
